This is a unique opportunity to meet on video Scotland's celebrated and esteemed writer, of whom a well-known critic said 'Nigel Tranter has undoubtedly taught many Scots the only Scottish history they know'.
From his home in East Lothian, the author tells what led him to becoming the writer of over 120 books, fiction and non-fiction, but in particular of the historical novels which have brought him a readership world-wide. We see his unique method of writing his novels as he walks with his notepad in the local countryside.
Nigel himself tells his own personal story of his career as a writer and the important part that castles have played in his life.

We also learn of his involvement in the restoration of over sixty Scottish castle ruins and share with him his delight in the saving of neighbouring
Ballencrieff Castle.
The video features Nigel's visits to this 16th-century tower house where he avidly follows its progress from ruin to residence. Owner Peter Gillies takes him around the building at various stages of its restoration, explaining its fascinating history and showing the discoveries they have made.
As Peter and Lin continued with the lengthy restoration work, they visited the owners of Cramond Tower, Edinburgh, to compare problems and experiences, and see how they succeeded in their project.
