Sightseeing
The Isle of Skye is full of delights and places to explore on your holiday.
Here is just a brief overview of this beautiful island rich in history and legend.
|
In the far north, the ruins of Duntulm Castle look out across the Minch towards the Outer Hebrides which lie sprinkled like jewels on the horizon. The strange rock formations of the Quiraing mountains on Skye's north-west coast are a breathtaking sight to behold and demand a photo stop even if you don't want to climb to the top! If you are touring around the Trotternish peninsula, don't forget to visit Flora MacDonald's monument and the Skye Museum of Island Life at Kilmuir.
The island's capital Portree is a few miles east of the cottage and here you will find a variety of restaurants, supermarkets and shops for you to browse around and buy provisions. The cottage itself sits not far from the Skeabost River, once the territorial boundary between the MacDonalds and the MacLeods, and the site of one of Skye's bloodiest clan battles. Not far away is the legendary Fairy Bridge and the ancient chapel of Saint Columba. |

The famous Cuillin mountains form the centre of Skye and can be seen from just about any point on the island. You will drive through them on your way to reach the cottage from the mainland. Whether you just tour around in your car or - for the more energetic - climb up to their rocky pinnacles, you won't be disappointed by the views. Regular boat trips operate from Elgol taking you into the heart of the wild Cuillin for a spectacular experience. From Sconser on the east coast you can take the little ferry over to the unspoilt island of Raasay for another day trip.

In the south, the Garden of Sleat will show you a different side to Skye. The clan Donald Centre at Armadale Castle contrasts with the 14th century ruins of the ancient stronghold of Dun Sgathaich (Dun of the Shadow), said to have been built by a witch in a single night. From Armadale you can take the ferry over to Mallaig for a day trip to visit the Road to the Isles. But with so much to see and do on Skye, you may feel you never want to leave this peaceful island again!
