LOCAL SIGHTSEEING

Fort Augustus

Fort Augustus is an excellent base for your holiday in the Highlands.

As well the old abbey and the maze, the Clansman Centre and the picturesque locks for the Caledonian Canal, the village also has a golf course, shops and tourist information centre. The Imray Shop has a huge selection of Scottish gifts and needlepoint items. Cruises are available on Loch Ness for a spot of monster hunting or just to enjoy the spectacular scenery. Fort Augustus

Photo of Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness From Fort Augustus you can tour the whole circumference of Loch Ness, visiting the Nessie exhibitions at Drumnadrochit and the historic ruins of Urquhart Castle (pictured here). As well as the main tourist sights, it is well worth taking a few detours to explore Glen Affric for example.

To the north, it is a short drive to the Highland capital, Inverness from where you can visit the infamous Culloden Battlefield, the Campbell stronghold of Cawdor Castle famed for its lovely gardens, and the popular seaside resort of Nairn, to name but a few of the local attractions.

To the south, Fort William lies at the other end of the Great Glen and nestles at the foot of Britain's highest mountain. From there you can explore the magnificent scenery of Glencoe or head northwards along the fabled Road to the Isles and over to Skye. The so-called 'misty isle' can also be reached by the road from Loch Ness through the Five Sisters of Kintail and this route enables you to visit the picturesque Eilean Donan Castle.
