Historic Culloden Battlefield - scene of the last battle fought on British soil in 1746 which ended the Jacobite Rebellion - is just 3 miles from us. There is a Visitor Centre with restaurant, gift shop, exhibitions and audio-visual display.

Whether you are here early in the season when the yellow gorse is in full bloom, or later when the purple heather is a real picture, this is always a moving place to visit. The anniversary is still commemorated each year by the clans which took part.

Be sure to take the detour to the nearby Clava Cairns and wonder at the prehistoric people who built the stone circles and tombs shaded by trees.

Scotland is famous for its castles and you are certainly spoilt for choice around Inverness. After stops at Culloden and Clava you can continue to Cawdor Castle where you can easily spend a couple of hours visiting the lovely interior and exploring the picturesque gardens and forest trails with cascading burn. Brodie Castle near Nairn is another beautiful place to tour from April to September. Famed for their extensive collection of daffodils, the gardens and woodland are open all year round.

And no-one wants to miss the ruins of Urquhart Castle, now in the care of Historic Scotland. A great place for the kids, it sits on the shore of Loch Ness where you can take boat trips to spot the monster. Visit the exhibition centres at nearby Drumnadrochit and you can be sure of taking home a photo of Nessie!

Explore whisky country along the Spey Valley Whisky Trail where the 'smell of the mash' is in the air. Or travel north to Tain and visit the world famous Glenmorangie Distillery, as well as Glen Ord Distillery at Muir of Ord, plus the Highland Wineries at nearby Moniack Castle.

While in the area, don't miss sampling the waters in the old spa town of Strathpeffer and step back in time at the old railway station which is now the Highland Museum of Childhood.

The bustling capital of the Highlands sits astride the River Ness and is overlooked by the 3400-ft mountain Ben Wyvis. As well as its shops, restaurants, castle and museum, the city is host to many interesting events throughout the year including music and arts festivals, concerts, Highland Games and the Inverness Tattoo.

Inverness has much to offer in the way of sporting facilities and entertainment for young and old alike with a modern sports complex, aquadome and ice rink, ten pin bowling, golf courses and boating park with miniature railway.

The Inverness Firth is home to a school of dolphins and there are 2 charter companies who operate trips from Inverness Harbour. You can also take a cruise from Cromarty to see the dolphins in the Moray Firth. It's very exciting and great fun for the kids! They can also visit the Wildlife Park on the Black Isle.

Most parts of the North West Highlands can be reached from Inverness in a day. By operating from a central location you can avoid the inconvenience of having to pack and move each day.

Take the main road across country into Wester Ross, following the famously scenic railway line to Plockton and Kyle of Lochalsh. Once on the west coast, you can easily visit picturesque Eilean Donan Castle and the romantic Isle of Skye.

Alternatively, take the Glen Docherty route past Loch Maree and Slioch
to explore the Gairloch region and the world famous Inverewe Gardens.
Or why not drive to Ullapool and get the early ferry for a day on the Isle of Lewis.

You can also head south from Inverness to experience the mountains and watersports on offer around Aviemore and the Cairngorm area or drive into the far north and tour the rich history of Orkney.

There is certainly plenty to do throughout the region and we have leaflets in the cottage giving details of places of interest.
