On the 11th January, for as far back as written records tell - and almost certainly to ancient Celtic times, the town of BURGHEAD in North-East Scotland annually holds its own unique festival of fire. The date is that of the old Scottish New Year, and the townspeople faithfully keep this old tradition alive.

Burghead, Morayshire

Where once this ‘purification’ rite was held by a small group of local Pictish people, today this spectacular fire ceremony attracts a crowd of thousands to witness the Burning of the Clavie.

Clavie - probably derived from the Gaelic ‘cliabh’ (clee-av).
A wicker object used for carrying, a basket, pannier, creel or cage.

Running time: 35 minutes.
