A popular stopping place for a picnic is nearby Rogie Falls where there are signposted walks in the forest.
Keep your eyes open locally for red kites now that these superb birds have been re-introduced to the Highlands. From the tourist information centre at North Kessock you can even observe their nests via video. To observe marine wildlife, take a boat trip from Inverness or Cromarty to see the dolphins of the Moray Firth, or go to Gairloch for a whale watching cruise. The northern Highlands are a hillwalker's paradise. Slioch, pictured below, towers over Loch Maree and the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve. |

For those interested in a dram, why not take a guided tour (and a free sample!) at the Glenmorangie or Glen Ord whisky distilleries? Or for something different try Moniack Wineries on the road from Inverness to Beauly.
Within a short drive of the cottage there are many historic places to visit where you can step back in time:
- Cromarty Courthouse Museum and Hugh Miller's Cottage, Cromarty.
- Groam House Museum, Rosemarkie.
- Highland Museum of Childhood, in the Victorian spa town of Strathpeffer.
- Dornoch Cathedral and Castle built by the Bishops of Caithness.
- Tain Through Time visitor centre.
- Tarbat Discovery Centre - historic church with exhibition of the unique Pictish archaeological dig.
